Vitamin D: a partner for your bones
How it helps your body use calcium.
Updated · 2026-09-15Start with the essentials
Vitamin D helps calcium absorption and supports bones, muscles and nerves.
Some oily fish and fortified foods provide vitamin D. Whether a supplement is needed depends on individual circumstances; excess supplemental vitamin D can be harmful.
Food, supplements and context
A nutrient’s role in the body is different from a reason to buy a supplement. Knowing that vitamin D helps calcium absorption does not, by itself, tell you whether you need a particular product.
Use the ingredient list to identify what you are taking. A multivitamin and a separate vitamin D product may both list the same nutrient; write down both rather than treating them as unrelated items.
A useful note for your diary
Example: ‘I added the product name and a photo of its label today. I want to ask whether it fits my current routine.’ You can record the label as written without deciding on a dose inside the app.
Useful questions to bring to an appointment include: Why am I considering this supplement? What am I already taking? Is there a reason to check my vitamin D status?
